department of lil wayne: (video) fat joe- "make it rain"(remix)

fat joe "make it rain"(remix) f. r. kelly, lil wayne, baby, t.i., rick ross

As far as pop music goes- and i'm talking about the pop music that basically grew out of the southern blues tradition here, the stuff that was transformed into musical recordings in the early 20th century, became "rock and roll" first, and then dance music and later hip hop- that is what "pop music" is to me- i'm pretty genre agnostic.

I don't consider myself a "rap" fan or a "rock" fan. In fact, my opinion of people who limit themselves to one genre of music is, basically, that they are ignorant. Don't like dance music? fucking try harder. Don't like rap music? fucking try harder. Can't stand rock and roll? Get over it.

Of course, there is good and bad within each genre, and each has its own relationship with the music industry. And all I have to say about that is that rap music is killing it in the new world order and rock music has lost the plot. Driving back from El Centro last week (During afternoon drive time, no less) I was postively STUCK at how 98.9 is fucking killing it and the alt rock stations can barely keep up. 98.9 is playing some hot shit, and alt rock sounds like some weepy girl party. Pop music on the radio should sound awesome on the radio- that's why hard rock stations will always be there. Americans will never, ever get tired of hearing AC/DC and Guns and Roses, not to mention Metallica and Black Sabbath on FM radio.

Now- I happened to hear LCD Soundsystem's "North American Scum" on 94/9 this week, and I know it's an add and that is what the fuck I'm talking about. Don't just limit the hip hop and the dance to the catalogue portion of your alt rock station. Mix it up- but intelligently. That is what people want.

But I want MORE MORE MORE. I can't get enough of diversity on my modern rock/alt rock radio station, and if I don't get it, I will listen to 98.9 instead. We don't have a dance station in san diego- they have them in other markets- not good dance stations- but if we had one, I would listen to that too.

Go where the hotness is, that's my advice.

Google Spends $3.1 Billion "CASH" on Double Click...

google, double click, $3.1 billion, cash...

That's C A S H. That's the real shit right there. $3.1 billion CASH purchase. And someone took Doubleclick private or whatever in 2005, ran it for two years and made $2.1 billion dollars. But I guess they HAD a billion dollars to begin with, but that's how you do it. Accumulate access to like, a couple hundred million, and then turn that into four hundred million after a couple years and keep moving until you're a billionaire.

Coachella: Super Secret Shortcut Drive / Back Route

For all of our lovely readers, here's the catdirt super secret shortcut back route into coachella - no traffic, no joke! it's always worked like a darling lil charm for team catdirt - we love driving in refreshed having spent nary 30 minutes in the car while everyone else spent 3 hours slogging it out in traffic. coachella is sold out all three (3) days so don't be a sucker -

Traffic on the freeway the closer you get to Coachella, we hear, is a nightmare - we usually stay in Palm Springs the night before at Casa Catdirt - so if you're driving from San Diego or Los Angeles the day of the show, our advice is to get into Palm Springs, off the main freeway as soon as possible - on the 111 and drive surface streets from there

From Palm Springs -

Take Hwy 111 South/East direction Indio
Turn Right on Washington
Turn Left on Avenue 52
From there, follow signs/policemen into the various parking lots

****remember to take very good note of where you are parked****

hey and when you see us at coachella, go ahead, buy us a drink in the beer garden - you'll be loving us, trust us.

trial: day 4 "generating headlines/at the same time spit dope rhymes"

Peregrine Trial Commences! (front page, business section, San Diego Union Tribune, what?)

Not a very flattering piece, but what are you going to do? Yesterday the Government did it's opening statement(1 hour), and two of the co-defendants gave their opening statements. Today it's our turn, and the other co-defendant, and then the government will begin the presentation of its case.

Court starts at 9:30 AM today- not 8:30 AM. I think we still end at 1:30 PM. No court on mondays! Regular schedule- 8:30 AM to 1:30 PM 880 Front St., Federal Court House, Judge Whelan.

department of lil wayne: cat dirt is a little late to the whole "mix tape" phenomenon

i was standing at the horton plaza sam goody this morning at 10 am, simeltaneously trying to validate my horton plaza parking ticket AND compensate for the fact that my ipod car thingie didn't work in my rental car (thanks fox rentals! gas face!). I was pretty much in "total despair mode" when i found the dj drama/lil wayne "mix tape" "dedication" for sale for $11.99. At a Sam Goody... in the mall... in San Diego. Couldn't help but read about DJ Drama's take down bust (you all understand that was a raid by the state, not the feds? right? you know that? ok.) in like every music blog, and I did enjoy the Clinton Sparks/Clipse "mix tape" i got at the clipse show.

so i'm a little bit late to this whole mix tape thing. i have been meaning to head down to fam mart and buy some local variants... but... it hasn't happened. but still- dj drama lil wayne mix tape $11.99 in the mall? Maybe the record industry is "not dead". I noted the CDs were indicated "consignment" on the shrink wrap(!) and it has a "your music everywhere distribution" icon- kingwood tx. 281-260-7777. dude- you better get your five bucks for that cd you sold.

in this mp3 l'il wayne pretty much clowns jay z- that's how i read it. maybe a record industry insider can give me another interpretation besides:

"I was signed to a multi record contract on cash money and jay z wanted me to come to rocafella/def jam but i was under contract so he was like "let me know when you get out of it!" and then universal came along and bought half of cash money and now i'm a millionaire and jay z can fucking wait."

that's what it sounds like to me.
l'il wayne "explains his (record) deal(mp3)

the rest of the cd is really good too, and honestly, i don't know where else i would buy it other then the web. so- good work sam goody- way to fucking adapt to the times. boo hoo tower records. boo hoo major labels. dj drama is selling cds at the mall, and that can't be good for you.

Faust Fest Tonight at the Casbah!!

Tonight four great san diego bands:

The North Atlantic
Mr. Tube and his Flying Objects (Pall Jenkin's new band)
Tender Buttons (Kill Me Tomorrow side project)
Carnival Barkers

are playing at the Casbah to support an even greater cause - raising funds to help out a friend's family. As you have probably read in City Beat and Myspace posts - Jacob Faust was shot to death by the San Diego police a little over two (2) years ago under what can best be described as very suspicious circumstances (daytime, unarmed, etc.).

The show will be $10 and ALL proceeds for the show will go to benefit the Jacob Faust Legal Defense Fund.

This is going to be a really good show - we hope we'll see you there!

jury trial day 3

Yesterday we finished selecting the jury. This morning opening statements begin. Opening statements are where both sides give the jury a "road map" of what to expect from the evidence in the case. Due to complex nature of the case, I'm really not sure how long the opening statements will take, but my estimate would be today and part of tomorrow. After that the Government will begin to present it's case, which they estimate will take two months (without any cross examination from the defense).

I think people imagine that when a lawyer is "in trial" they literally don't do anything else job related. While this may be true for lawyers are mid size and large firms, the fact is that even though opening statements are today, I still have to drive to El Centro this afternoon and meet with a client in custody tonight.

I will bring back some photos from el centro.

I saw a guest blogger picked up some slack yesterday- jfcd is an "industry insider" and he has excellent taste in music (misfits obsession exccepted).

new video; new post-er

Hello,

It's jfcd from a little place north of san diego called los angeles. i am going to be guest posting while scott is hard at work suing 91x for impersonating a quality radio station (i'm allowed to say that i'm a guest). I will keep my posts catdirt-ian (aka sloppy grammar and witty) and you can send hate mail to radioperfik@gmail.com.

I love GOES CUBE (www.myspace.com/goescube), they recently played the beauty bar and you were probably not there! Here is a first look at their brand spankin new video for "Goes Cube Song 30." And in case you didn't know...all their songs are numbered and start with "Goes Cube Song __" Good for a laugh for sure.

Here are 2 photos from when they played the Viper Room in LA in March.

trial: day 2

Here is a chat excerpt from... yesterday... with San Diego Union Tribune Sports Writer Nick Canepa:

PFix(Q): Hi Nick! What are the chances John Moores will have to sell the Padres pending a possible Peregrine bankrupcy outcome?

NickCanepa(A): I think the chances are nil. I don't know how much he's even involved with Peregrine anymore.

Dear Nick Canepa, You don't know what the fuck you're talking about. xo Cat Dirt

Yesterday was the first full day of the jury trial. We are in the process of picking a jury. There is a jury consultant assisting us. It is very interesting, but I haven't been involved in the whole jury thing- that is more the baliwick of co-counsel. What I have been doing is waking up super-early so I can do work before trial starts at 8:30 AM. Obviously, I can't really talk about what's going on. I would expect an article appear in the San Diego Union Tribune after opening statements (start today or tomorrow?). Anyway, I have to go to El Centro for court on... Thursday? So I won't even be there. Bummer.

So today it's more jury selection and possibly some opening statements. There are potentially 150+ different witnesses, so just making sure that we've reviewed the exhibits prior to their introduction and read all the documentation we have on all of the witnesses will consume time before and after trial each day.

PRESS RELEASE:

STREET SCENE RETURNS

Live Nation to Produce 2007 Edition of the Renowned Music Festival

Del Mar Fairgrounds September 22nd & 23rd

REVISED-- For Immediate Release—Monday, April 9, 2007
( Los Angeles , CA ) Street Scene, San Diego’s preeminent music event for over two decades as well as one of the biggest festivals in the country, is back; and, with a new site this year’s edition promises to be even bigger and better than before. Today, Live Nation (So-Cal) President Nick Masters announced that Live Nation will produce Street Scene 2007 in conjunction with longtime event organizer Rob Hagey.

Street Scene 2007 will take place at the Del Mar Fairgrounds Saturday, September 22nd and Sunday, September 23rd. The festival lineup is to-be-announced, with more information coming soon.

“We are thrilled to be a part of such an eagerly-awaited event,” Masters said, “and we look forward to continuing Street Scene’s famous mix of exciting artists and hot new talent.”

After more than twenty years in San Diego ’s reinvigorated downtown area, a trend which the event anticipated and helped spur, Street Scene 2007 now gives concert goers a new take on the festival experience. The Pacific Ocean , located nearby, offers the prospect of tranquil breezes and spectacular sunsets. However, Street Scene’s size, scope and atmosphere will remain, with the Fairgrounds’ large complex holding the variety of stages, venues and attractions that Street Scene is known for.

Those stages will host a wider variety of talent than ever before. Combine Live Nation’s contacts within the music industry, then add in Hagey’s experience, savvy and knowledge of the local scene, and this promises to be the biggest and boldest Street Scene yet.

Pete Wentz: "I Don't Think You Should Be Stealing From People."

Taken from the following interview: FallOut Boy Doesn't Like to Steal....Oh Really?

Q: Who writes your songs?

Pete: Our singer writes the music, then I’ll write the lyrics. Then we put them together as a band so everyone can contribute. Our guitarist wrote a couple on the last record too.

. . . [text omitted] . . .

Q: We all know how the record companies feel about online downloading music for free, how do you as a musician feel about it?

Pete: I don’t think that we would have the amount of people here tonight if it wasn’t for downloading. I don’t think you should be stealing from people (Emphasis added.) but I personally happen to be a downloader and I think a lot of the fault lies with the record industry treating the consumer as the enemy, the kids that are buying the records are the enemy. There’s a million other reasons why. Costs can be cut in so many other areas. True changes need to come about and there needs to be somebody younger doing it. There’s 40-45 year old guys and they don’t really have a grasp about what’s going on right now in music. You have 45 year old guys telling 20-something year old guys what to do and how to please 14-15 year old bands. It’s pretty stupid. You have these bands that will have one single on an entire record that’s good, why would you want to buy that? I wouldn’t buy that record. There needs to be true change rather than dropping prices by seventeen cents. I guess my opinions on it are kind of weird.

Fall Out Boy Cancels San Diego Concert so Wentz can deal with the fact that he is a FRAUD

Lyrics swiping phony Pete Wentz "postponed" the San Diego tour date of their Honda Civic Tour because he is too ashamed to show his face in this city. Or something like that. "Pete Wentz is a lyrics stealing fraud!" I wonder if there are any other bands out there whose lyrics are on a fall out boy record?

Fall Out Boy has postponed its April 29 concert at Coors Amphitheatre in Chula Vista so that its controversial bassist, Pete Wentz, can deal with some “personal issues.”
a written statement, Wentz said, “We want to put on the best possible show we can and know that this extra couple of weeks will give us the time to put ourselves in the right place to put on the best show we can.”
The new date for Fall Out Boy's Honda Civic Tour, featuring The Academy Is . . . , +44, Paul Wall and Cobra Starship, is now Sunday, July 1, at Coors Amphitheatre.

Tickets will be honored at the new date. Refunds are available at point of purchase.

Jr. Metro Reviews The Sundelles, The Muslims, Roman Spring and Vinyl Radio at the Ken Club, Friday, April 6th

By Jr. Metro (Fifty on Their Heels):

Friday night at the Kensington Club. A club notorious for strong drinks and smelly toilets. Anyhow, Friday night featured an amazing show with great bands, and good friends. Sundelles from somewhere near LA, Roman Spring and Vinyl Radio, and one of my personal favorites, the fucking MUSLIMS.

So I arrive and go straight for the bar to get myself a drink. Ordered a yummy tasting Pabst and planted my ass down and stared at the wall for a good 10 minutes waiting for the first band to play. Talked to the guys from the Sundelles and the Muslims and had more beer. Boredom was growing and I could not wait for the Sundelles to take the stage. After about three pisses since I got there, it was 10:30...TIME FOR THE SUNDELLES..

Fans of 60's pop/motown will love the Sundelles. Not only are they lovely guys, they write damn good pop songs. Catchy as hell with great hooks. You'll be tapping your foot the entire set. I first saw them at the Che Cafe in March and instantly took a liking to them and then found out that they are amazing guys and loved knocking a few back with them. Anyways, great set on Friday night guys!! and I'm sure San Diego can't wait to have you back again....(Check, May 5th @ the Che Cafe bitches!)

Second...Roman Spring...but not before waiting in line for another piss then waiting a good 10 minutes for another drink. Oh no, here comes the wine.....you know what that means.....the speech is going funny.

Roman Spring did about 5 or 6 songs including a cover of the Kinks classic "Till the end of the day". They were tight as shit that night. They seemed to have the biggest draw from what I saw but then again, my vision was starting to become blurry and at that point, everyone had a twin. They are made for stardom...Cute boys that write catchy dancy pop songs. I love their bass player!!! He's the nicest guy on the planet..Oh Jake...oh Jake.

After their set the crowd was thickening and all going out to the bar for more drinks and at the point, it was time to start stepping on some feet cause little Junior had to pee pee!! and bad. More drinks....stumbling round. I sat at the bar talking to the Roman Spring and knocked more back with them. Yeah...here is where the night goes very very wrong. Sam yelling at people in line for the bathroom and kissing everyone in sight...Next time you kiss me...SHAVE DAMMIT!!!!! Love ya!

I have to apologize to Vinyl Radio! I was stuck at the bar having a conversation and didn't catch much of your show. Love you guys and I'm sorry.

THE MUSLIMS ARE UP!!!!!!!!!!! THE FUCKING MUSLIMS! Matty, love ya! Cheers to this guy and cheers to Emily for the beer. By the time they went on, everyone in the crowd was very very intoxicated including yours truly. From what I recall, the Muslims were fantastic! 3rd song in "LEARN!". My favorite! Things got a little chaotic. Beer flying in the air, people dancing into each other. Shit, this was a top notch performance. Mark my words, you will be hearing from these guys (and girl) everywhere you turn.

Anyway, that was it.....Atleast I didn't pee my pants....

get fired up!

the refused "the new noise" (video)

heard this song over the climactic football championship game of the movie version of friday night lights(billy bob thorton as football coach, if you can believ it.) i thought it was both bizarre and totally appropriate. maybe better then this video. i can't believe this song goes on for five minutes

america to quentin tarantino: we hate you

("video") dmx- ride or die

god this song. it's just so... aggresive. they should really play it more at sporting events, only with the swears taken out. take a moment to enjoy- but those lyrics are def nsfw.

so everyone see the new box office numbers? Quentin Tarantino's "Grind House" came in 10 million dollars UNDER their "projection."/sales forecast Presumably, said projection was PAID FOR by the studio (Weinstein Studios) it's double embarrasing. And actual financial evidence of HOW MUCH AMERICA HATES QUENTIN TARANTINO.

also awesome- Ice Cube's new movie beat Grindhouse. Oh fuck Ice Cube must be laughing his fucking ass off at all the haters right now. Hey Weinstein- go sell your product to the french, i bet they'll eat that shit up.

Scarlett Johansson to sing Back Up @ Jesus and Mary Chain Glass House/Pomona Show

bragging about site traffic

"Don't hate the player, homie; Hate the game!"

I'd like to thank lindsay lohan, jeremy piven and the "fleshini"- oh and defamer- for making this insane leap in traffic happen.

My goal by the end of this year was to average 1000 visits a day. done. Took less then a year. My blog has the most traffic of any blog in san diego by a factor of five. If you have any lindsay lohan related t shirts to sell, this is the place to advertise.

as credible a way as any to "make it" in the music industry

Wait for Pete Wentz to rip off your fucking lyrics. That settlement is pretty much a direct admission of guilt by Pete Wentz, documentation via mp3 to follow. Pete Wentz, how could you disappoint me so. Anyone got a copy of an American Nightmare cd for me to check out?

FROM BLURT (San Diego Reader):
Fall Out, Indeed Some Girls lead singer Wes Eisold is credited as a cowriter of three songs on Fall Out Boy's new CD, Infinity on High. However, he didn't help write any of the songs on that album.

According to the Philadelphia Daily News, Eisold was given publishing/songwriting credits as part of an out-of-court settlement. The credits should have been on Fall Out Boy's first disc, From under the Cork Tree, released two years ago. The paper reports that Eisold never gave Fall Out Boy permission to use lyrics he wrote and performed with his old band American Nightmare.

Eisold, who now lives in Philadelphia, still tours and records with Some Girls, a San Diego band that released Heaven's Pregnant Teens last year on Three One G Records.

"Pete Wentz is supposed to be the mastermind of Fall Out Boy," says Justin Pearson, co-owner of Three One G Records. "But I don't know how much of a mastermind you are if you're just stealing someone else's lyrics."

Soundscan sales figures for 2005's Cork Tree are nearing the three million mark; Infinity on High has sold one million copies in its first six weeks of release. -- Ken Leighton
