The men from fire-sticks, with their hands' swift movement, have, in deep thought, engendered glorious Agni, Far-seen, with pointed flame, lord of the homestead.(Hymns of the Rig Veda Full Text)
The "Vasus set that Agni in the dwelling, fair to behold, for help from every quarter: Who, in the home for ever, must be honoured. Shine thou before us, Agni, well-enkindled, with flame, most youthful god, that never fadeth.
To thee come all our sacrificial viands. Among all fires these fires have shone most brightly, splendid with light, begirt by noble heroes, Where men of lofty birth sit down together.
Victorious Agni, grant us wealth with wisdom, wealth with brave sons, famous and independent, Which not a foe who deals in magic conquers.
To whom, the strong, at morn and eve comes, maid- like, the ladle dropping oil, with its oblation: Wealth-seeking comes to him his own devotion.

New "Band" Alert: The Walking (SD)
Combines acoustic guitar w/ some fuzzy electronics. Above average voice. Playing the Tin Can Ale house on June 16th, 2009. It's sleepy time music, but it seems more interesting to me then others in the genre. Do people love it? That's my question. The myspace profile says 2004 sign up, so the "new" designation is used loosely here.

Ryan Leaf: What A D-Bag...
CANYON, Texas (AP) -- Former NFL quarterback Ryan Leaf has been indicted by a Randall County grand jury on drug and burglary charges.(SAN DIEGO 6 NEWS)
The indictment was handed up Wednesday in Canyon. It charged the 33-year-old former San Diego Chargers quarterback and former West Texas A&M quarterbacks coach with one count of burglary to a habitation, seven counts of obtaining a controlled substance by fraud and delivery of a simulated controlled substance.
Canyon police Lt. Dale Davis said Leaf is suspected of breaking into a Canyon apartment on Oct. 30 and stealing the painkiller Hydrocodone, which had been prescribed to an injured football player.

Los Angeles, CA: Varrio Hawaiian Garden Gang in Huge Rackettering Indictment
Federal authorities today unveiled a sweeping racketeering indictment accusing a southern Los Angeles County street gang of a litany of crimes, including killing a sheriff’s deputy and committing hate crimes against African Americans in order to rid them from their turf.(LA TIMES)
The indictment, along with several related ones, charges more than 100 members of the Varrio Hawaiian Gardens gang with murder, attempted murder, drug trafficking, weapons trafficking, extortion, kidnapping and witness intimidation. U.S. Atty. Thomas P. O'Brien, speaking at a news conference this morning, touted it as the “largest gang takedown in United States history.”

Random Band Photos
First up is Justin Pearson's... side project? All Leather. Hey if you can pose shirtless and make it work, why not?
These are The Coathangers from Atlanta, GA. I love the "four quadrants" band photo. It just works for me. Playing San Diego 07-06 (Casbah)
Oops I already broke the "band photos" post-rule. This is the cover of a 7" from Neon Aztec Music featuring Fungi Girls and Natural Numbers. Looks fun!
This is The War on Drugs from Philadelphia, PA. I know abstract is what's up but I like to be able to see the band in the performance photos at least.
He is in The Barrett Trap they play Pysch. Surprised?

Sidro Punks, another San Diego, CA. pysch act.
The Chainsmokers from NYC. I like acts with the integrity to move towards a stereotype.

List of New Friend on Myspace - With Brief Observations
I just wanted to say something about how brilliant this variety of Indian Temple architecture is. If you look at the photograph above you can see how the motif duplicates itself. It's kind of like a geometric expansion where you start from a point and expand out, simultaneously in every direction- in 3 dimensions. Almost organic/scientific at the same time. And they executed this very expertly. Compare to Islamic architecture of the middle ages, where artists would consciously break a line or design so as to avoid perfection (thus angering the gods.)
I have been spending a lot of time on myspace in the last month. After spending about zero time on myspace for the last year. Myspace: Still There.
1. Life in Orbit - San Diego, CA.: Frank Zappa/Phish-ish. Opening for A Scribe Amidst the Lions @ 710 Beach Club on 05-24
2. PATHAAN - London UK. BBC Asia DJ plays a lot of "Asian(Indian)" electronics cuts but also has Santogold remixes by Switch so. Cross over appeal.
3. PENS - UK. Putting out song on 4 way split 7" by Art Fag Records. Coming on West Coast Tour in August, 2009!
4. FRUIT SAND - Oakland, CA. Representing the East Bay in the post-No Age landscape.
5. Nite Jewel - Los Angeles, CA. LA smell hipster band. Female vox, electronic beats, doing shows w/ Telepathe & touring Europe in Summer.
6. Obeast Tapes Camarillo, CA. The so cal tape underground.
7. Worldwide Computer God California. A faster "Earth"?
8. Sex is Disgusting Records London, UK. London hipsters work with Vice UK. Is Vice still cool in the UK? J/k, guys.
9. BUTTERFACE ????. New music blog (started February 2009) totally on it. (blog)
10. Fun Fun Fun Seattle, WA.: Interpol?

Sanskrit Literature is Noise Rock
The tendency has been rather towards exaggeration, manifesting itself in all directions. The almost incredible development of detail in ritual observance ; the extraordinary excesses of asceticism ; the grotesque representations of mythology in art; the frequent employment of vast numbers in description ; the immense bulk of the epics; the unparalleled conciseness of one of the forms of prose.A History of Sanskrit literature By Arthur Anthony Macdonell (GOOGLE LIBRARY)

So I saw the Crocodiles first show at the Brick by Brick. I'm pretty sure I saw their first show at the Casbah and I had supported the Prayers and was bummed that didn't work out. So I saw the first couple of shows and was like "of course san diego isn't going to like this." And then over the winter they were like "hey- we got this offer from Fat Possum" and I was like "Wow cool." Then the SXSW NY Times story, the Pitchfork review, the New York Times review and people are like, buying the record.
The show at the casbah last monday was a scene must-see. I mean... Saul Q was there? What was strange is that alot of people were there for the Crocodiles. People who were wearing Crocodiles t-shirts? People buying the record and carrying it around. And a guy in a full-on press vest with a camera. And it was like "weird."
San Diego based Spirit Photography led off. They have a 7" on Sacred Bones Records. Spirit Photography was a revelation in it's own right. I'm not going to get into it, but the fact is it was just objectively really good whether you're a hipster or, say, someone programming an alt-rock radio station. They didn't have a drummer but managed to set up a constant rhythm using looping pedals I think. Craig sings and plays guitar. He also runs Volar Records with his... partner Melissa. And that's all I'm going to say other then they have a show at the Soda Bar on Wednesday May 27th.
There was genuine anticipation and excitement for the Crocodiles set and I was just like "wow." Not something you see alot in San Diego for a touring band, let alone a local opener at a Monday night Casbah bill. Crocodiles have def. got their live act down. First of all, they have a genuine hit to open the set with. Second of all, Brandon has his act down. Third, they've worked out the lighting and staging. And the crowd fucking loved it. It's a good show. They deliver the goods.
Spectrum was fine. I didn't stay for the whole set but I get it. Spaceman 3 yeah yeah. In summary the answer to the question "How are the crocodiles live? is "really good."

The Fax Machine is a Wonder of Modern Technology
I am going to fax it to you right away.
One criteria to distinguish professionals from amateurs is "Do you have access to a fax machine?" For professionals, the answer is ALWAYS yes- even when they are "on the road," staying at business hotel, for example. For amateurs the answer is either "No." or "I have to go to Kinkos to fax something." As long as this is your answer, you are at an amateur at whatever.

Mexican Feds Stop Tractor Trailer w/ 23K LBS of WEED
TIJUANA — A tractor-trailer driver hauling onions between Mazatlan and Tijuana was also carrying a hidden cargo of nearly 23,000 pounds of marijuana, the Mexican military announced yesterday.–S.D.(SAN DIEGO UNION TRIBUNE)

The 5,114 seized marijuana packages are worth about $4.7 million, the military reported.

Notable Pitchfork Track Reviews: Lichtenstein
The review makes oblique reference to Vivian Girls AND Dum Dum Girls:
But where some of the other Girls view the world through the echo and bombast of Spector-vision, the off-kilter lien of "All at Once" suggests that they often use the good works of Kleenex & LiLiPUT to find their way.(Pitchfork)
Also:
With their rudimentary chops, their round-robin harmonies, and their way with a tune, Liechtenstein might bear more than a passing resemblance to your favorite member of the brand-new-you're-retro Class of 2008.(Tricky lyrics)
