show review: vinyl radio(didn't see), the shambles, buzzkill romantics, anna troy

last night i was one of those people who stands out in the courtyard chatting instead of watching the band. in fact it was even worse- i was actually sitting in the back room! yikes! the bottom line is that i've been working alot, so everyone is just going to have to cut me some slack until about... um.. april, may, june, july- until about august. ok? i apologize in advance for spreading negativity.

tim pyles- is it too much to call him an american hero? when i go to one of his events i am filled with positive energy- especially a night like last night, free, easy going, filled with people, etc.

bart mendoza- can i please spend some time listening to bart tell me about lester bangs and the capitol records building swap meet? so awesome- so many great stories. I'd like to do an article where bart interviews jay allen sanford. i bought a couple 7"'s from Bart last night- one had an awesome Roy Lichtenstein inspired(dervived?) cover... i think that was the Manual Scan 7".

Anna Troy- led off the night. she has a rythym and blues thing going on (think bonnie raitt or sheryl crow(?)) which is frankly fantastical considering her 21 year old age. She is of course the younger sister of ex-next big thing Lindsay Troy. My thought is to buy Anna a copy of a slits record and some bikini kill and to see what happens. Anna- if you want to hear some good punk rock tunes- leave a comment and i'll forward you some mp3s. the bottom line is that it's pretty impressive to me to see a 21year old woman fronting a band playing at the casbah- she has the tools to make an impact, but i think she should switch genres. she's young- has plenty of time to find a voice of her own...

The Shambles- it was crowded for the Shambles. Are they mod... or what? I really think Bart Mendoza is one of my heroes... just the fact that he's still doing his thing.

Buzzkill Romantics- i went to high school with jason hee! it was a class of 80! jason is clearly not a cat dirt sez reader. i probably should have introduced myself, but, i dunno- i felt awkward. Buzzkill Romantics has an alt-rock vibe. People are pretty into them.

Vinyl Radio- left before they played, but I would have all readers note that they are #7 on Cat Dirt Radio. And in negotitations with SESAC- sign up already! That Vinyl Radio record is worth a "Best Rock Album" nomination for the 2007 San Diego Music Awards in my book.

Thank you AGAIN to Tim Pyles and 94/9 for having Fifty on Their Heels- a slot on Tim Pyles show is pretty much the most us little local acts/record labels could ever hope for, so I think it's important to express my appreciation for everything that Tim does!
