This Weekend in San Diego: Parquet Courts & Gym Standard Art Show

Julian Klincewicz: Don't Call It A Comeback 01 from Matthew Lawless on VimeoJulian Klincewicz: Don't Call It A Comeback 01

There is actually stuff to do in San Diego this weekend!  It has been SO quiet... on the surface.  Of course, underneath the placid exterior, the San Diego is also a churning, seething, locus for outrageous power plays and equally outrageous responses, mostly occurring on the internet.

On Saturday, LUBE songwriter/frontman has an art exhibition at Edwin Negado's super cool store GYM STANDARD.  I am a big fan of the GYM STANDARD instagram account, and a long-time reader of his now shuttered blog, Edwin Himself.  Here is the official verbiage, reprinted in full because they did a good job:

At Gym Standard and Coffee & Tea Collective. Presented by Altamont and Converse.
SANDIEGO #JK30ECB »»» @ALTAMONT and @CONVERSE are pleased to present @JULIANKLINCEWICZ: DON’T CALL IT A COMEBACK, a solo exhibition of illustrative, sculptural and photographic work by San Diego-based artist, Julian Klincewicz. The exhibition opens on Saturday, January 18th and will host a public reception between 7.00pm-10.00pm at @GYMSTANDARD and @CANDTCOLLECTIVE. Media Coverage by @MONSTERCHILDREN. Live music by @TROPICALPOPSICLE and @THEBLACKOUTS.
Chicago born, San Diego raised, Julian Klincewicz is an active member of San Diego's skate, art, and music scenes. After forming a friendship with professional skateboarder Zarosh Eggleston at the age of thirteen, Julian was introduced to Transcendent Meditation, a technique which he actively practices, and even led him to be featured in a short documentary about TM, spearheaded by the David Lynch foundation. Amid College Applications, recording his third album, a job as an artist's assistant to Kelsey Brookes, filming a series of vignettes on VHS (which explore the idea of subtle discomfort), modeling for Hedi Slimane, filming a part for Lurkville Skateboards next skate video, and finishing his senior year of high school, Julian has been busy preparing work for his first solo show, "Don't call it a Comeback".
Also Saturday night is Parquet Courts AND Destruction Unit. I don't know if you know this, but local label Volar Records put out a Destruction Unit LP.  They are playing at the Che Cafe.
