The Void is a good vibe because it's small but not so small that people who don't want to listen to the band don't have to. That's important, because 30-40% of the your good times sold-out show crowd doesn't actually want to listen to music. Strange but true- you need to make those people welcome. Any successful local/national music venue has to successfully cater to multiple clientele. It's ok to have a reputation as catering to a specific segment of the audience for local/national music as long as you don't actually do that in real life. What's nice is when you get a good MIX of real music fans and people who are just doing whatever on a Friday night. Gotta keep the door charge under 10 bucks though or the non-music people will just go somewhere else.
Because ultimately the number of "regulars"- partisans, band members, significant others of band members, their friends, etc. is vastly, vastly, vastly outweighed by people who just want to have a good time when they go out- those people will try new things, and then abandon the new thing when the next new thing comes along.
Besides local openers Cathedral X you've also got Some Ember, which has a pretty cool tag in the Bay Bridged (SF Bay Music Blog)
Here is a jam from them:
It's spppooooookkkkkkky. Is it time to declare the 2013 San Diego Indie Rock local music scene "open" for the year? I think it might be. Also, beloved local act Swim Party is playing Soda Bar and tickets to THAT show are only 7 USD. Not quite the double dip I was looking for but a potential double dip regardless.
