& Foxygen
Tonight, @ The Soda Bar in San Diego, CA.
Is it in any way inappropriate to call Katy Goodman of La Sera and Vivian Girls an "indie it girl"? Is that an offensive thing to say?
The "It" factor is a phenomenon that has been badly, badly compromised by the advent (triumph) of celebrity based culture. What is Kim Kardashian if not an "It" Girl? She's an It Girl who made a sex tape, is what Kim Kardashian is. The key component to "itness" is popularity, the two work together, the perception of one factor influencing the perception of the other among potential Audience members. Certainly the "It Girl" concept is freighted with substantial gender related issues, there is no corresponding "It Boy" concept to parallel the It Girl.
Calling someone an It Girl is a way to recognize the level of Audience attention paid to the recipient, for whatever activity the It Girl performs. Aside from debating the respective merits of the term itself, there is the issue of whether a particular woman is or is not an "It Girl." One of the attractions of the term It Girl is flexibility, assuming you adopt a loose definition of the term and allow for multiple It Girls at the same time.

| Tim Cohen of Fresh & Onlys and Magic Trick |
Opening for Katy Goodman's La Sera is Magic Trick, featuring the productive Tim Cohen of San Francisco's, The Fresh & Only's. Tim Cohen is the opposite of an It Girl. An interesting pairing, no doubt.
