Show Review:
Three Nights At The Con
John Maus
Tropic of Cancer
DIVERS
at The Casbah, San Diego, CA.
Presented by The Casbah and Impose, curated by DREAM Recordings.
Well, I'll tell you one thing: The crowd sure was into John Maus. Like pop star idol into him. People were freaking out in the front row, I thought I saw one girl crying. So what can I say, his Audience loves him.
Tropic of Cancer is a two-piece, both female, from Los Angeles CA and they play spooky goth pop with a certain je ne sais quoi in their presentation that draws the eye and ear. Unfortunately, the live show is static, by design I'm sure and if the songs are good enough I don't think the Audience will care- what does XX do on stage anyway? Tropic of Cancer have a facebook page and a band camp profile with a series of (internet only?) singles extending back in time to 2009. Slow burn.
DIVERS has a release coming out on DREAM Recordings, produced by Jon Greene of Electric Orange studios. Aimee needs to be able to project her vocals over more aggressive drum beats- when I saw Grimes in Toronto DIY style she couldn't do it, so it's tough.
I think this year Three Nights at the Con was a success, whereas last year it was a flop, so that is some progress at least.
This Sunday the Golden Hill Street Fair has Donkeys, Cuckoo Chaos and Jeans Wilder on 21st st between C & Broadway- one block over from the old site of the Golden Hill Block Party. It starts at NOON so literally don't sleep on it. I fully encourage readers to attend this event. (SEZIO GOLDEN HILL STREET FAIR)
