| Garrett Michaels (on the left behind the mic stand) |
There was a time- during the life of this blog- when I blogged about both 94/9 and 91x regularly, and had people reading because of it, but then I said to myself, "Is that what you want?" To blog about the gossip of two alt rock radio stations in San Diego? The answer, alas, was no.
But truly, this has been an earth shattering week in the tiny little snow globe of Alt Rock radio in San Diego, CA, with local stalwart Robin Roth taking over at now-female-led 91x and just a day or two later, Garret Michaels leaving 94/9. Garret Michaels has been program director at 94/9 for a decade. That is since 2002. That is a lengthy tenure./
It will be interesting to see what he does next, since he has so much knowledge and experience about rock radio in the U.S. Maybe working for an independent radio promoter with a major label client? That would be a pretty sweet gig. After all, being able to get a song on the radio in the United States is pretty much the most valuable skill that a person can possess in the music industry. Michael Jackson hired his radio promotion guy as his manager before Thriller came out.
I think it's important to fully recognize and acknowledge all the support that Garret Michaels gave to local music during his decade at 94/9. I think 94/9 served its audience well while Garret Michaels was in charge.
