It's set in San Diego. From the preview I watched, that dude most definitively is a hipster, because only hipsters scribble song lyrics/poetry in high school style notebooks when they are 25+. Normal adults take long hand notes on yellow pads, and they aren't writing song lyrics and/or poetry when they do so.
