Columbian Cocaine Kingpin Captured in Jungle Raid

Jungle Colombia View from Lost City

DON MARIO POST
(CAT DIRT SEZ)

So they captured "Don Mario" or "Daniel Rendon Herrera" as he's noon. He was a right wing death squad impressario who ascended to be the cartel coordinator for cocaine growers down there:

Daniel Rendon and his brother, Freddy, otherwise known as "The German" for the discipline he demanded from his troops, controlled an area of river-laced jungle near the Panama border that has long been a major corridor for drug and arms traffickers.

The brothers were among the last paramilitary leaders to demobilize under a 2003 peace deal that promised fighters reduced sentences and protection from extradition to the United States if they confessed to all their crimes.

But while his brother and other paramilitaries agreed to await justice in jail, "Don Mario" fled back to the jungle and rearmed, police say.

Sounds like a charming family.

It's amazing to think that Colombia basically grows 100% of the cocaine in the world. What are the odds of that? The Colombian's have never gotten into to manufacturing methamphetamine, and you don't get the sense of the marijuana industry down there- although it could be part of the Mexican marijuana trade.

Another Boat/Full of Weed/San Diego

Point Loma ~Point Loma/Smugglers cove?

If I could think of one subject within the area of "marijuana trafficking" that I actually find interesting it would be how to solve the problem of moving what is essentially an agricultural crop illicitly. When you're talking about smuggling weed in large quantities, you need to think big, because hey- that stuff stinks and it's bulky. Frankly, it's a wonder that the cartels even bother importing weed since the quantity of their "mexican" is basically synonymous with "shitty weed." But apparently this is a huge earner for them.

Smuggling by boat is nothing new in San Diego. Here is an article from the New York Times Circa 1984:

Three Federal grand juries on the West Coast today indicted 27 people as participants in the ''Coronado Company,'' which the Justice Department said was in fact an international drug ring responsible for smuggling 32 tons of marijuana.

Attorney General William French Smith said the indictments, returned from Feb. 10 to Feb. 22, were unsealed today in Federal courts in San Diego, Seattle and San Francisco.

Before today's indictments, 57 defendants had been convicted in San Diego, Seattle and Bangor, Me., in connection with ''Coronado Company'' narcotics ventures.

The case led to the seizure Government's of numerous assets illegally accured by the ''Coronado Company'' and related criminal organizations and their members.
(NY TIMES)

In yesterday's case, the twist is that the weed was in a boat that was being towed on Rosecrans. So they don't even unload the thing- just load it onto a trailer and drive. Cheeky. (SAN DIEGO UNION TRIBUNE)
