Oh San Diego... if I hadn't personally witnessed so much progress in the last year, (Chasers investing thousands in a new sound system to book local music? WTF? What's next? Seriously- I have no idea. I don't even know where Chasers is...) last night's shitty attendance would have bummed me out, but in the words of John Travolta (& CDW) "I'm too blessed to be stressed".
The bottom line is that last night was a great show. Goes Cube is powerfully awesome- reminiscent of Fugazi and Slint... at the same time! They are a three piece, but it's hard to imagine how they generate so much noise with that line up.
I was enthralled by their set, even though it's much heavier then the music I normally listen to. After the set, I got a chance to speak with Matt Ear Farm (earfarm.blogspot.com)- he is on tour with Goes Cube, shooting a tour documentary. Anyway, I give Goes Cube my highest recommendation- both for the cd and the live show. They are a huge deal in NYC, and it was just comical to see that only five people showed up. Ha.
Foreign Islands was the headliner- reference points for them are !!! and The Rapture. Whatever you want to label that category- they are squarely within it. They had good energy- and they just put out a record that I should have bought but didn't.
I was amazed at how cool Goes Cube was about playing in front of ten people. Great band, nice people, shitty turn out.
Tonight at Beauty Bar Qu'est Ce Que C'est is playing their first show in months, with dj edgartronic. That should be fun... Fifty on Their Heels @ the Rythym Lounge (3048 Midway) on Saturday night...
