Show Review: Ima Fucking Gymnist, The Sess, Fifty on Their Heels @ Tower Bar

Photos: The Sess, Fifty on Their Heels, Ima Fucking Gymnist

i was looking forward to the show LAST night for two reasons: one, i wanted to get a closer look at the tower bar itself. two, i wanted to see ima fucking gymnist makes their debut in the san diego metro area.

the rain early last night was a foul portent. it doesn't take alot for people to stay home. also last night, competition was tought- anyone check out that Mr. Tubes and the Flying Objects/Kill Me Tommorow show at the Casbah? And there was the Orion Frequency gig at the Alibi. Yikes!

The Tower Bar is kind of a mystery spot for me. As I sit here writing this, I'm looking at the WEB SITE for the tower bar and i'm wondering, what if any, relationship exists between the tower bar on university and the desert tower overlook out on the 8, before you descend into the imperial valley. some? none at all? not sure.

if you look at that website- you can see an old photo the Tower Bar as it looked in 1932(?)- when it opened(?). They've got some nice photo galleries. I kind of consider the Tower a rockabilly spot, but i think it works equally well as a punk rock spot. Check out their interior photo gallery- that's quite a collection of vintage beer paraphenelia.

Last night it was a small, but attentive audience.

Ima Fucking Gymnist opened, and they impressed. They are a three piece- drummer, bassist & singer/keyboardist. The bass drum combo gives them a distinctive sound. It's kind of like punk rock stripped down to its barest essence. I was super into it. Also, they're all like 18- they had to leave after the gig because they couldn't hang out inside the bar(?). They would be perfect for a CHOB show. Their cd's were wrapped in felt- i'm going to do a separate post on their demo cd. Ima Fucking Gymnist is from the San Feranando Valley- they are part of the Smell scene, friends with Mika Miko- and well, they rock. If you like Mika Miko, you'll love Ima Fucking Gymnist, basically.

Fifty on Their Heels played second. It's always interesting to watch the crowd at a fifty on their heels' show, especially if its cold outside and the crowd is just starting to get warmed up. Last night was no exception. At first you could see the crowd kind of skeptical but receptive, soon everyone was tapping their feet and throwing a couple of fists in the air to Occupation, really a great song that gets stuck in your head, especially at work, "An oocupation to ruin your life," great lyric, classic, who doesn't live that? Jr. writes really concise, insightful, sharp lyrics. he doesn't get enough credit for that. It was no Vegas show but this week they weren't opening up for Ratatat, right? but the crowd at the Tower on a rainy night had a good vibe, friendly, fun and Junior put on a great show as usual, running into the audience, climbing on everything in sight. I'll never forget the night they played the Smell in LA, Jr. was feeding off the enthusiasm of the crowd and tried climbing a precarious stack of speakers that looked like it was going to topple over at any moment. Everyone kind of breathed a sigh of relief when he jumped down - Nick, the bassist, is finally starting to loosen up on stage and really move around - before he was just kind of defending his territory from Junior.

The Sess closed- they busted out what had to be a twenty minutes jam session and just generally "rocked out". Certainly a plus to the Tower Bar is that you can actually have a real punk show without having to worry about jaded scenesters or ending before midnight. It's a good venue like that. I had a great time. Probably because I got caught up in the spirit of the place and had one or two too many.

I am going to endeavor to go back to the Tower Bar- keep an eye on that calendar over at the website, and maybe try to book a show there. I know Miggs Tanng!(there last night) used to(?) do a dj night at the Tower Bar. Junior Metro spun last night, and he even had the bartender shaking his head in awe at the vinyl sweetness. someone ought to invite him to guest dj @ skull kontrol. huh? he'd fit in great with that crew!

the attendance was like this:
9-10: 15-25
10-11: 35-50
11-12: 50ish
12-12:30: crowded(60?-70?)
12:30-1: 40-50
