letter from san francisco...
ok- not really FROM san francisco, since i've come back from thanksgiving, but more like stuff i thought about IN san francisco. one comment i got up there from a reader was that this blog was incomprehensible- i've gotten many a comment like that since i was writing gonzo journalism for my high school newspaper. part of it is that i work fast- don't really edit, hardly spell check. this is a hobby, not a job, but i do want to connect with readers, so that's something i'm going to work on.
while i was up there i heard SEBADOH was going to re-unite and play the Noise Pop festival. that got me thinking- one of the goals here was for fifty on their heels to play sxsw, but now i'm more like- sxsw, meah(for the record, cdw was way out in front on that tip). one thought is that sony would get us to sxsw, via the video game. i don't think that will happen. more importantly, i don't really like Austin, or sxsw. i mean, fred armisen made his comedy bones mocking the living crap out of sxsw and that was what? eight years ago(yes- 1998)? can't we all just move on?
so sesac is thinking about maybe doing a show for noise pop, and they might be able to fit us on the bill. and i think that would be cool, and i'm just over sxsw. also, the guy who does noise pop also does ioda- which i haven't really talked about- but it's a digital distribution network for independent labels(local band members, take notes)- in competition with the Orchard. It's not just about getting your music on itunes, it's about having music professionals in different parts of the country listening to yourself on line- that's like, the OTHER part of the phrase "digital distribution". they also host mp3s for bloggers(see this blog. it's all very complicated and i don't understand it very well, which is frustrating.
also: can we get a los angeles show for simian mobile disco puh-leaze? check yo' ponytail? new years? i'll bring the beer!
props to dfcd- volcano? that's an inside joke. but dfcd is a big cat dirt reader so he gets an inside joke here and there.

Coachella Extended to THREE days: April 27-29th!
as reported today on pitchfork- Coachella will be three days this year, not two. yikes. that's a lot of coachella. 4/27-4/29/07. see you there!
it's gypsy-tastic: Carmen @ San Francisco Opera
so i'm going to see "Carmen" @ the San Francisco Opera tonight. Yes, I'm wearing an appopriate outfit.
two attitudes i find hilarious about opera:
1. "opera as ulitmate embodiment of "high" culture": opera is popular entertainment, ok? just because it's popular enterainment for the ancien regime in 17th century doesn't make it any more sacred, in fact it should make it LESS sacred- we're in America, all right?
2. "opera as cultural posion, to be avoided at all costs": if you go to rock concerts at coors amphitheatre or whatver you should be able to at least sit through an hour or so of good opera. it's music with elements of theatre, just like a my chemical romance show.
San Francisco Opera Production of "Carmen"
i'll have a full review from the portion i actually sat through when i return- it's four hours long! yikes!

thanksgiving...
does this holiday commemorate genocide? probably less than "columbus day", but that's besides the point of this blog. of interest? i'll be out of town from tuesday afternoon until saturday afternoon. in san francsico, or "'frisco" as us locals call it(ha-ha). one of two things will happen- either no blogging at all or some cryptic experiments in mobile blogging, in anticipation of a cat dirt sez texting project that may or may not actually happen. i don't think that statement violates my non-disclosure agreement, but i'll check it this morning to make sure.
i'll try to do a san diego/san francisco weekender mid morning before i go, but no promises!
while i'm gone, why don't you download some mp3's? that gypsy guy is pretty popular, and plastic little is the hip-hop/dance bloggin hawtness out of philly. kill rock stars holiday album? huh- huh? check it out. use the mp3 label below.

cory kennedy and cobrasnake paper magazine video interview
the keywords don't lie and the keywords say that YOU want to know as much as humanly possible about cory kennedy. even it means sacrificing my dignity, even if it means reposting stuff that appeared on gawker hours ago.
all i'm saying is, i can't fucking WAIT until stingaree outbids belo for the rights to put on the monthly "cory kennedy" presents DJ AM and guests... cover? $50.

MTV/Gamespot Review - Soundtrack is Best Aspect of Cash Guns Chaos!!
sure the game gets panned - but the highest score goes to the "sound"
Category / Score
Gameplay/ 5
Graphics / 5

here's what alex navarro had to say about the soundtrack of cash guns chaos:
The soundtrack is made up of a decent roster of punk rock songs from bands you've probably never heard of.

ESP Records is an Electronic Music Label from Milan, Italy
Italian dance music has been all over the.... er... well... i've been thinking about it alot, because italo disco has been back in vogue lately. true, it was in vogue for me 10 months ago, if the cutesy myspace messages i traded with tucson area djs are accurate, but whatever-- i'm all about bringing back de-classe electronic music sub-genres. my one main criticism of indie dance nation is that there is too much rock sounding stuff, not enough actual dance music. i, for one, would like to hear more house, minimal techno, etc. i mean, i'll dance to shiny toy guns, sure, but my heart ain't in it.
anyway, right now i'm grooving to the tracks i've downloaded from Milan, Italy based electronic music label ESP Records. Talk about cachet!
Don't really know alot about this label, other then what the web page says, but i know what i like, and i like electronic music influenced by the minimal techno/house of kompakt records(colgone germany), and therefore, i like this. it's house music that's incorporated the advances of the last decade, and it's from Milan, so check it out. especially djs.
ESP Records(Milan, Italy)(Web)
well you should be able to download these tracks, but it ain't working right now- they have a download on their web site, so check that out, and if the downloads start working i'll post an update.![]()
